In August 2018, a research team headed by Prof. Chen Shengdi from the Department of Neurology at Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine proved from a clinical point of view that the gut microbiota is indeed involved in the early onset of Alzheimer's disease in humans. Chen pointed out that in the stage of mild cognitive impairment before AD, the gut microbiota has undergone changes similar to the stage of Alzheimer's disease.
